Almost everyone who joins Twitter is bewildered as to how they should use it. For awhile you feel like you’re travelling in the dark and that’s probably close to the truth. It takes a while for the light to come on.
One thing that helped me was that I clicked to see who was following those I was following and/or who they were following and every time I came across someone of interest I would start to follow them too.
What then happened was that I started seeing more Tweets from people I was following on my wall and things I could respond to or Tweet about myself. This opened up conversations and if I retweeted (RT) or replied to someone I would find that I became visible to their followers and gain more followers myself.
It kind of snowballs after awhile so stick with it!
Saw a tweet from a friend about people sending Twesents so of couse I had to go see what that was about.
It’s a way to send a virtual gift or present (Twesent) to followers. Not really sure of the benefit from this. Seems almost like poking or other things you can get at FaceBook. Don’t get those either.
But if you want to explore then visit Twesents to see what’s there.
Ever wonder what some of the more obscure acronyms and hashtags mean on Twitter? Some are just plain easy to figure out i.e., #Quote = “A Famous Quote” collected under the #Quote hashtag for later retrieval. Others are not so easy to decipher such as, #TCOT which stands for “Top Conversations on Twitter.” From what I’ve experienced, this hashtag is a very vocal group not afraid to share what they think about “hot topics” politics, religion, education, you name it. On Tuesday nights, there is a group of WAHM’ s (Work at Home Moms) that use the hashtag #gno for “Girl’s Night Out.” Anyone can create a hashtag topic to trend. Basically, just create it and start using it–there are no rules. Some hashtags take off like a virus such as #FollowFriday. One you may be seeing a lot of in the near future is #GED999 which stands for Good Energy Day on 09/09/09.
There are some places to go look for definitions: @Tagalus and @Tagdef, mostly you can get the gist of the meaning by participating in the trending topic in Tweetchat or Twittersearch. These hashtags can be upper or lower case, it makes no difference.
Well, here’s another way to see your profile - in pictures. They say that a picture is worth a thousand words but when you have 50 images that must be a book almost!
Anyway, it’s fun to play with and gives a great visualisation for you to save. You can even view them as a slideshow rather than a collage of images.
All you have to do is enter your Twitter ID - no need for your password or anything, click on Go and watch the images build up your profile.
Portwiture - to quote them:
Portwiture grabs photography from Flickr that matches the content of your most recent Twitter updates. The result is a serendipitous visual representation of your Twitter profile.
Here’s an example of a couple of our profiles:

This site claims to be a completely useless and sounds like it was designed by someone whose thoughts strayed during a lecture. At any rate, you can find out how much time you’ve wasted on Twitter at Tweetwasters.
However I’m not sure it works on all profiles. It couldn’t find my main one but could find my photography profile.
You can get your profile twitalyzed by visiting http://www.twitalyzer.com/twitalyzer/ Although what it all means I’m not quite sure.
My signal to noise (??) was astonishingly high they say although my influence was quite low. And my generosity was moderate to high.
All in all it probably means I’m moderately active at Twitter. Of course - I do have work and other things to do!
Have you seen others share their photos on Twitter and wondered how they did that? Enter Twitpic. Very easy - login with your twitter id, select the image from your computer and upload it. Add your tweet and publish. Very easy!
If you use Firefox and would like to use a Twitter add-on, then you can’t do better than Power Twitter. I prefer to use this when I’m logged into only one Twitter profile.
Great article seen at Blogs Tech Republic and written by twitter.com/jasonhiner:
Twitter can be an invaluable tool for business networking, but most new users don’t get it at first. Learn why in this look at the four stages that the average Twitter user traverses on the path from newbie to devotee.
——————————————————————————————————————————————————
There’s a strange phenomenon that happens almost every time someone joins Twitter. They hate it. At least at first.
But many of the people who once hated Twitter — or at least, didn’t quite get it in the beginning — are now many of its most active users and raving fans. So what’s going on here?
There seems to be four natural stages that the average Twitter user goes through from the point of first trying it until the point of fully embracing it and making it a part of daily life. Obviously, not everyone sticks with it and becomes a Twitter devotee, but there’s definitely a growing cadre of people who believe that there’s some magic happening in the Twittosphere.
